Good News for our State Parks!

We weren’t planning to send out a newsletter this week. In fact, this issue is quite a bit lighter than usual, as our staff is enjoying some well-deserved vacation time. However, we’ve had some great news that we just couldn’t wait to share with our members and friends!

Last week we discussed a controversial proposal to develop some of our Florida state parks with hotels, golf courses, and pickleball courts. This was put on hold, thanks to a massive outcry from Floridians across the state. This plan, initially championed by Governor Ron DeSantis, sparked widespread concern as it threatened to transform our state parks into commercial ventures, potentially compromising the natural beauty and ecological integrity that we all hold dear.

However, in a demonstration of the power of public voice and bipartisan cooperation, this plan has been shelved—for now. After hearing from constituents on both sides of the political spectrum, Governor DeSantis decided to press pause on the proposal. This decision underscores the importance of community engagement and vigilance in protecting our natural resources.

We must remember, though, that this is just a temporary victory. The governor himself has hinted that these park development proposals may resurface next year. That’s why it’s more important than ever for us to remain watchful and proactive in advocating for the preservation of our state parks.

We’ve seen similar situations unfold in other states like New York, New Jersey, Colorado, and California, where nonprofits were used as a front to push through development projects under the radar. These nonprofits, once established, can later declare insolvency and sell the land to developers thus bypassing public scrutiny. It’s a concerning pattern that reminds us to stay vigilant.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who stood up against this plan. Your voices made a difference, and together, we’ve shown that when the community comes together, we can hold our leaders accountable and ensure that our parks remain places of natural beauty and tranquility for generations to come.

As we celebrate this success, let’s not forget the ongoing work that lies ahead. The IRNA will continue to monitor any future developments closely, and we urge you to stay engaged and ready to act. Our parks—and our community—depend on it.

Thank you for your continued support and vigilance.

Warm regards,

The Indian River Neighborhood Association
